The Kimberley is one of the most remote areas in Australia. Tourists are advised not to leave the main roads and to avoid driving at dawn or during the night – mainly because of the dangers of wildlife and the road trains which dominate the night hours. You must ensure you are adequately prepared with several days of water, food and fuel. Off-road travel is only recommended with an experienced guide – and there is no mobile phone reception, only satellite. Across the Top End and the Kimberley Regions, outside the comfort of the cities and main towns, tourists and locals search for the undiscovered – the secret spot where they can be alone with their thoughts. Light filtering through the trees. The only sounds – the crunching of leaves and rocks underfoot, or the trickling of water as it flows by. But whether deep in the bush, on a desert plain or alone on the banks of a remote river – it's easy to leave yourself vulnerable. Vulnerable to hazards you may not even realise.   ____ Researched and written by Gemma Harris   NARRATION: Episode narrated by the Anonymous Host   MUSIC 1. On the morning of Saturday, May 3rd, 1997; 33-year-old, single father Gary Patterson woke up before dawn in his home in Waco, Texas. He got dressed in black jeans and a white shirt and boots. He didn't need to wear a suit to his final job interview, he had already met with one of the business partners, and they had got to know each other pretty well over the previous three weeks. That morning, the 7:30 am flight from Waco to El Paso was the last step in the process – he would meet the company's CEO, and would hopefully return home that night, the new head of a large housing development project. After a tough few years, things were starting to look up.   ____ Researched and written by Anna Priestland    NARRATION: Episode narrated by the Anonymous Host   MUSIC 1. Although Alcatraz Prison had since been repaired to a workable condition, the battle scars of Bernie Coy's 1946 violent failed escape remained visible throughout the cell house. Areas of the floor were chipped, cracked, and faded black from where grenades had detonated. In response to The Battle of Alcatraz that resulted in the deaths of two correctional officers, the imposing prison tightened its grip on its inmates. The stricter control was used to readjust the kinds of rebellious attitudes and behaviours that led to the siege in the first place – and aimed to crush all thoughts of escape. In the ten years following The Battle of Alcatraz no inmates attempted an escape. It seemed the temptation had been overtaken by fear of death. However, the thought of escape never left the minds of battered inmates who resented Alcatraz and sought freedom. As days dragged on and felt like eternity, inmates found solace in passing the time by dreaming up elaborate escape plans and thinking of ways to get out of Alcatraz once and for all. Every morning at 6:30 am inmates woke to the piercing sound of the morning whistle. They rose, made their beds, cleaned up their cells, and washed themselves in preparation for breakfast. By 7:15 am a second whistle blew signalling the start of the 'count'. Inmates stood at the bars of their cell while a passing guard took a head count. It was no different on the morning of June 12th, 1962. Inmates leant against the bars as guards walked past counting. Oddly, the guards realised they were missing three. Thinking they must have miscalculated, they walked back along the corridors and recounted, but they got the same result. Three inmates were missing...   ____ Researched and written by Milly Raso   NARRATION: Episode narrated by the Anonymous Host   MUSIC 1. Alcatraz Prison was the solution to America's overwhelming crime problem. It didn't aim to rehabilitate like other prisons. It aimed to punish. The worst-of-the-worst inmates of all the other prisons across America were shipped to Alcatraz, inmates who were deemed unmanageable for traditional penitentiaries. San Francisco residents were wary of having a prison crowded with the most dangerous criminals in America located in the heart of their harbour. Alcatraz Prison operators assured them that their one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art island prison was completely escape-proof. The prison was fitted with an abundance of safeguards to keep prisoners in. But it didn't stop some inmates from trying to get out...   ____ Researched and written by Milly Raso   MUSIC 1. Gerard woke up around 6 am. Allison wasn't in bed. Their three daughters, then aged ten, eight and five weren't awake yet. Gerard got out of bed and walked through the house to see if Allison was already up, or if she had fallen asleep on the sofa the night before. She had done that in the past. But she wasn't there. Gerard assumed Allison must have gone for her early morning walk, something she usually did around 6 am, but that would be odd considering she had the conference that day, and she had mentioned wanting to leave by 7. He thought she mustn't be far away, so he went to the bathroom for a shave. At 6:20 am he sent Allison a text: 'Good morning! Hope you slept well? Where are you? None of the girls are up yet! Love G.' At 6:45 am Allison still hadn't returned home. Gerard grew concerned, he didn't want her to be late for the conference, so he tried calling Allison's phone, but she didn't answer. He sent Allison another text message saying the girls were ready and could she text him back or call. He then called his father, Nigel and sister Olivia. They lived close by, and one of them could watch the girls while the other helped him look for Allison. Within minutes they were on the streets surrounding their home looking, maybe she was hurt and twisted her ankle or something. At 7:15 am, Gerard called Police Emergency…..   ____ Researched and written by Anna Priestland   MUSIC 1. 'Flatline intro' and 'Come play with me' intro and outro www.dl-sounds.com 2. Cowra is a town in the central west region of New South Wales, located about 300 kilometres west of Sydney and 189 kilometres north of Australia's capital, Canberra. With less than ten thousand residents, it was a town where everyone knew everyone and things that happened took no time to be whispered across the bar at the pub or in the yard after church. Cowra wasn't a place where the locals thought much about violence or violent crime. It wasn't something that was of great concern within the community. Of course, there was trouble, every community had its fair share of that, but it was very much a normal country town. It wasn't unusual for many houses in the 80's to leave their doors unlocked. It was just the way it was – safe; people looked out for one another. But in the early hours of Wednesday, April 15th, 1987, the simple, peaceful country town of Cowra was faced with a crime so violent and so shocking, it would be forever changed...   MUSIC 1. Since the tourism boom of the 1950's, the Hawaiian islands have been enticing tourists into their relaxed, laid-back lifestyle. From the early days, honeymooners and holidaymakers could arrive in droves, welcomed by smiling hula dancers with floral leis. Hawaii is made up of 132 islands with a total area of six and a half thousand square miles. The Island of Oahu is home to the state's Capital, Honolulu, and the famous Waikiki Beach. It has a large port, Army and Naval Bases and is home to Pearl Harbour. In 1985, Oahu saw a huge influx of young adults migrate, often for the Army or Navy – and also due to the huge boom in telecommunications companies that had expanded into Hawaii. The central years of that decade were an unusual period between the early eighties recession, and the stock market crash of 87' - and the dark years that followed. Like the mainland and much of the developed world, Hawaii was hit with high unemployment and financial stress in the early 80's. Many hotels couldn't survive, and some of the largest travel companies were forced to close. But during the mid-eighties, the economy shifted. During this small window, there was a temporary period of new growth. Although there had been a significant decline in tourism since the boom of the 50's and 60's, in the years 1985 and 1986, ten and a half million people visited the islands of Hawaii. This boom period brought in huge Japanese investment and money started rolling in. The grand old hotels of the 50's and 60's were renovated and redeveloped, and the prime land was subdivided for golf resorts. In 1986 alone, Japanese investors spent between one and two billion dollars on property. The resort development boom of the mid 80's helped slow the unemployment rate which had spiked a few years earlier. But during this period, Hawaii also saw an increase in violent crime, rape and murder in particular. The Aloha state—with its swaying palm trees and mysterious rich volcanic landscape—was about to change. The laid-back paradise was about to experience a time of fear. Time no one was prepared for... _______ Researched and written by Anna Priestland   MUSIC 1. 'Flatline intro' and 'Come play with me' intro and outro www.dl-sounds.com 2. The newsagency was always open on time, especially on Saturdays, the busiest morning on the shopping strip. People were standing out the front of the newsagency, staring at a huge pile of papers still bundled on the footpath, and when they tried the door, it was locked. Immediately fearing something was wrong, Kathy and Robert went straight over to Min and Lily's house to find out why they hadn't opened their newsagency. They assumed they were either sick or maybe one of the boys had hurt themselves. When they arrived, they found the front door unlocked. Robert and Kathy entered the house and called out, but no one responded. They slowly made their way upstairs. Kathy opened her brother and sister-in-law's bedroom door. Robert was following close behind. What did they see? _______ Researched and written by Anna Priestland   MUSIC 1. In the autumn of 1998, 23-year-old Amy Lynn Bradley was told by her parents that they had been gifted a Caribbean cruise. Amy wasn't excited by the news like they were, she had only just moved into her own apartment after graduating from her degree in Physical Education, and she was about to start a new job. She was busy. But more than that, the idea of a cruise across the sea gave her the creeps. She didn't really want to go. She would be just as happy settling into her new place, which was nearby her parents and brother's home in Chesterfield, Virginia. Amy was really close with her younger brother Brad who was 21, and he and their parents—Iva and Ron—were eventually able to talk Amy into joining them. Ron had been given the trip by the insurance agency he worked for, and he believed it was a great chance to spend some quality time together. Seven days of sunshine, cruising the Caribbean, cocktails and endless sunsets, it wasn't long before Amy thought perhaps a cruise wouldn't be so bad after all. It was starting to sound like the trip of a lifetime...   _____ Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories.     MUSIC 1. It was a school morning, and for once Shannon Matthews had something to look forward to. Her fourth-year class had their first swimming lesson that day, and she had been looking forward to it for ages. Despite the freezing room, she crawled out and sleepily climbed down the ladder to get ready. It didn't take Shannon long to remember the argument she'd had with her mother Karen Matthews and her step dad Craig Meehan, the night before. They'd got into it, and Shannon had sworn at Craig. That morning, Shannon got dressed in her Westmoor Junior School black jumper, white cotton t-shirt and black trousers. She pulled on her favourite rain boots, they were bright pink with grey fur around the edges. She picked up her swimming bag and a blue striped towel and then walked out of her room. By the time Shannon was ready to leave at 8 am, her mother Karen was up, and the argument started up again. Karen shouted at Shannon as she left for school: "Get out of the house and don't come back." School mornings were busy on the Moorside Council Estate in West Yorkshire, England, with many of the 220 estate homes having kids rushing out the door at 8 am. The temperature was barely over freezing as Shannon started her half mile walk to school. When she saw her cousins further down Moorside Road, she told them about what her mum had said when she was leaving. It was nothing new. That morning would be the last time Shannon Mathews would ever walk out of her home on the Moorside Estate. It would be the last time she would ever attend Westmoor Junior, and it would be the last time that any of her friends saw her...   ____ Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories.   MUSIC 1. Victoria Police Constables Steven Tynan and Damian Eyre's night shift started on October 11, 1988, at 11:00 pm. Call sign 'Prahran 311', it had been a shift of routine policing for the pair; a domestic dispute, noisy parties, a drunk in Fitzroy Street, a pub assault on Chapel Street, a smashed shop window, and two activated security alarms. At 4:39 am on the morning of October 12, two and a half hours before the end of their shift, a new job was radioed to them from the police communication centre. "Prahran 311, if you can slip down to Walsh Street in South Yarra. Mr Ellis of 220 Walsh Street states there's a white Holden Sedan, don't know what the rego is, got the lights on and smashed windows in the middle of the road." Constables Tynan and Eyre found the white Commodore still sitting in the middle of the road out the front of 220 Walsh Street. Tynan and Eyre approached the Commodore with no sense of danger. All signs suggested it was a stolen car abandoned after a joyride. Considered a routine job, it was nothing out of the ordinary at all for a typical police shift...   ____ Researched and written by Milly Raso.   MUSIC 1. Blacktown is a suburb located in Western Sydney, 37 kilometres away from Sydney's Central Business District. In the mid-1980's, drugs, crime and high levels of unemployment were rife in the streets of Blacktown. But it was one particular night that changed everything. On Tuesday, February 4th, 1986, a dairy farmer in Prospect, a neighbouring suburb of Blacktown, noticed something strange. All morning his cows had been gathered in the same spot at a place he called "The Boiler Paddock." He first noticed it at 9.30 am, when he was leaving the house to go to a cattle sale. When he returned home two hours later, the cows were still standing in the same spot. It was something he hadn't seen before, so he decided to check it out. What the farmer found, caused him to run to his motorcycle as fast as he could, and speed off to his house to call the police.   ____ Researched and written by Victoria Dieffenbacher.   MUSIC 1. On December 7th, 2003, thirteen-year-old Daniel Morcombe told his brothers he was going to Sunshine Plaza to get a haircut and look for Christmas presents. Shortly after lunch he left his home on Woombye-Palmwoods Road and walked just over one kilometer to an unofficial bus stop located under the Kiel Mountain overpass. Daniel had caught the bus from here to the shopping plaza many times before. Standing underneath the overpass, he waited for the 1:35 pm scheduled afternoon bus service to Sunshine Plaza. But the bus Daniel was expecting had broken down 750 meters before the overpass. It was out of his sight. At 2:15 pm a replacement bus approached him. Daniel signaled for it to stop and pick him up, but it continued on through the underpass. Due to the delay, the replacement bus was now going express to Sunshine Plaza. The driver saw Daniel signal him, but he was under instructions not to stop. There was a smaller shuttle bus only a few minutes behind, which was stopping to pick up stranded passengers along the route. The shuttle bus reached the underpass at 2:18 pm. Only three minutes after the first bus passed. However, during those three minutes, Daniel vanished without a trace.   _____ Researched and written by Milly Raso.     MUSIC 1. EAR/ONS BONUS EPISODE #1 Interviews with Jane Carson-Sandler & Carol Daly Jane Carson-Sandler survived the brutal attack and rape of the East Area Rapist in the October of 1976. She is the fifth known survivor. She was in bed with her three-year-old son when they were attacked. Her attack had come off the back of around a month of hang up calls. These calls had escalated, and one time, Jane told the caller to stop, the voice then told her he was going to kill her husband. Police who were not linked to the Rapist investigation assured the family it sounded like a prank. Just before Jane's attack, she reported a break-in to police. She had found muddy footprints on the carpet under her son's window, and upon further inspection of the house, she realised inexpensive jewellery had been stolen. Detectives who investigated were not the officers working the rape cases, so weren't privy to previous attacks. They reassured her it seemed like the work of kids. Jane had links to the medical field, the armed forces as well as the education system. Three sections of the community to come up again and again throughout the series. You heard during the series that Detective Carol Daly began working the East Area Rapist cases from the day of Jane's attack. Jane's crime scene was the first encounter that Carol had with any survivor of the rapist. Carol's life and career were changed that day. Carol went on to be an integral figure in the support and rehabilitation for survivors of rape, both those by the East Area Rapist as well as others.

[Part 5 of 5] When Part 4 began, it was August 1978. Sergeant Jim Bevins and Lieutenant Ray Root from the Sacramento Task Force held a special meeting with law enforcement agencies in Contra Costa County. They believed The East Area Rapist was heading south, possibly to Southern California, and they felt he would strike in Contra Costa County on the way. They advised Contra Costa law enforcement agencies to form a task force and work together, but there was pushback – the general feeling in the room was, "Not in our county". When Bevins and Root were proven right, a task force was formed headed up by Detective Larry Crompton. Crompton consulted a criminal psychologist, Dr Emily, who warned him that the East Area Rapist wanted to kill, he just needed justification. During a search after attack 43, the first attack in Danville, investigators found pages torn from a spiral notebook, known as "The Homework". They were "The General Custer essay", "The 6th grade rant" and "The punishment map" – a hand-drawn map of a housing development. On July 5th, 1979, the East Area Rapist attacked a couple in Danville, but they had a plan in place. The husband stood over the rapist and yelled at him, while his wife ran outside and screamed for help. The rapist took a few steps back. He didn't attack, and he made no move for a weapon. He didn't say anything. He just stared at the husband through the jagged holes of his mask. The husband made a run for it, and the East Area Rapist escaped. Police were on scene in minutes, and tracking dogs picked up his scent. But he slipped through their fingers again. ________ Open and download map #5 of the attacks here Open and download "The Homework" files here   Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. [Part 4 of 5] Part 3 began with an emergency press conference in mid-1977. A composite sketch, as well as a physical and psychological profile of the East Area Rapist, was released. The public were warned to be vigilant. Police received thousands of tips, and there were countless sightings of the rapist, unfortunately, these sightings weren't always reported at the time. Many persons of interest made the suspect list, some even looked like prime suspects due to many similarities, but these turned out to be nothing more than strange coincidences, and most were eliminated from the investigation. The East Area Rapist enjoyed communicating with police, the press and survivors. In August 77, the Sacramento County Sherriff's Office received a letter, known as the "afraid letter" from someone claiming to know who the East Area Rapist was. The letter writer requested to be contacted by the press if the police wanted further contact. The police did what the letter writer asked, but they never heard from the person again. The rapist started calling survivors, ranging from hang up calls to obscene calls and threats to kill. A local TV station received a poem, called 'excitements crave", claiming to be from the East Area Rapist. After a dentist went public and added more to the reward offer for the East Area Rapist's capture, he attacked close to the dentist's office in South Sacramento. The furthest south he had attacked up to that point. Police had another close call when they set up a covert operation in a Rancho Cordova 7-Eleven store. This backfired when the suspicious male they were waiting for, called the store and asked to speak to the officers. Brian and Katie Maggiore were shot dead in Rancho Cordova in February 1978. With the exception of one further attack in South Sacramento after the shooting, the attacks moved outwards after this, to Stockton, Modesto and Davis. ________ Open and download map #4 of the attacks here Open and download "The Homework" files here   Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. [Part 3 of 5] 1977 started off with a task force being created by the Sacramento Sherriff's department to catch the East Area Rapist. The crime lab was able to determine that the rapist's blood was Type A. The rapist continued following his earlier MO until the local papers made special mention of the fact he had never attacked a woman with a man present in the house. He adjusted, and from that time on he targeted couples. As the year went on, and attacks grew more and more frequent, so too did the press coverage. But still, it was a time when not everyone got news the moment it happened. While there were many people terrified of the East Area Rapist, there were those who were still oblivious.   Despite the East Area Rapist having a very specific MO, it was not released to the public. The police didn't want a state of panic and they didn't want a copycat. But that meant when women got hang up phone calls, or heavy breathing calls, or when there was a break-in with nothing of value taken, only strange items moved around or stolen, the community had no idea these were related to the East Area Rapist case. In mid may 1977 the rapist showed everyone he may have been in attendance at a community meeting that took place towards the end of 1976. At this meeting, a man stood up, paced up and down yelling that no man would stand by and let his wife get raped, he certainly wouldn't. Just seven months later, the East Area Rapist targeted this man and his wife. During this attack, the rapist said he would kill his next victims. But there was confusion as to what exactly he said. According to the survivor, he said he would kill two people if he heard about the attack in the media. But according to her husband, he said he would kill two people if he didn't hear about the attack. When we left part 2, the police were deciding what to do…   ________ Open and download map #3 of the attacks here   Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. [Part 2 of 5] On June 18th, 1976, the Sacramento Sherriff's Department responded to a break in, and rape of a young woman. By the end of the year, there were ten attacks in total, all attributed to the one serial offender, who the media dubbed, "The East Area Rapist". Detectives with the Sherriff's Department noticed the MO of the East Area Rapist fairly early on but kept the information under wraps. They didn't want a state of panic, they didn't want a copycat, and they didn't want to alert the East Area Rapist that they were onto him. But by November 1976, the community started to become aware that a violent serial predator was walking their streets. The Sacramento Sherriff's Department attended a local school meeting. Their intention was general crime prevention, but as people questioned rumours of the rapes, they were forced to confirm that a serial rapist was at large. The police were shocked at the brazen nature of the attacks and the meticulous planning. The East Area Rapist moved through the community with military precision. He seemed to always know where the police were. Did he have a police radio? Did he have ears in the force? Or was he just lucky? He had no sense of fear, his level of bravado was rarely seen in criminal investigations. And he had only just gotten started.   ________ Open and download map of the attacks here   Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. [Part 1 of 5] In 1976, Rancho Cordova was a fairly new, postwar suburb in East Sacramento. Beginning as a housing development in the 50's by the 70's it was predominantly a middle-class single story neighbourhood, surrounded by other similar suburbs. Rancho Cordova was the place where a wave of violence and terror came crashing down on the state of California. This growing community was completely unprepared for what was coming. _____ Open and download map of the attacks here   Researched and written by Anna at A.G.P Stories   MUSIC 1. On November 8th, 2010, just after 9.30pm; 25-year-old Jennifer Pan was in her bedroom. She had her TV on and was chatting on the phone while getting ready for bed. She could hear movement downstairs and voices she didn't recognise. There were people in the house. She heard footsteps thudding so loudly up the stairs; she knew they could not be her parents. They could not be her younger brother Felix either; he was living half an hour away at University. Jennifer hung up the phone and sat frozen in her room. She was too scared to turn the tv down, and she was too scared to open her door.
